How to Use your Family Budget to Pay for Kids College

You’re using a family budget to make sure all family expenses are practical and sensible. Your family travel is spread out, and you’re staying around the area. You’re doing everything you can to contribute to your family savings but it still doesn’t seem like it will be enough to pay for your kid’s college.

With college tuition prices rising, you never know what you’ll have to pay in 10-15 years when it’s that time. Therefore, we put together a list of tips on how to use your family budget now to save for your children’s college education.

  1. Start Saving Today – For every $1 you save for your children’s college, make sure you also put $1 for your retirement, and $1 for a rainy day!
  2. Plan Ahead – Get to know the fees that colleges charge during the application process. Plan on those fees increasing based on the amount of colleges your children apply to. Research college tuition increase percentages in the page decade, and talk to your Congressmen about their views on tuition freezes!
  3. Don’t rely on school counselors – It is the counselors responsibility to send out transcripts, SAT scores, and answer any questions your kids might have about a certain university. However, be prepared to follow up, ask your own questions, and become as knowledgeable as you can.
  4. Involve your kids – Asking your children to partially pay for their education not only makes them realize how valuable it is, but also has them realize how expensive it is in certain areas or private vs. public schools
